While most every O'Fallon car shopper has heard of all-wheel drive, Volkswagen offers something new with the invention of the VW 4MOTION® All-Wheel Drive. Learn more about the Volkswagen all-wheel drive system today with Auffenberg Volkswagen.

What Vehicles Come with VW 4MOTION®?

Not every vehicle in the Volkswagen lineup offers VW 4MOTION®, but there are plenty of great options available, from sedans to hatchbacks to SUVs.

  • Arteon
  • Tiguan
  • Atlas
  • Golf SportWagen
  • Golf Alltrack
  • Golf R

Standard AWD Performance

When it comes to performance, all-wheel drive is more efficient than four-wheel drive while offering many of the same traction and control benefits. While AWD systems are always on, 4WD systems need to be switched on and off manually or by the vehicle’s sensors. While better than nothing, the time delay of 4WD can be crucial if you hit a patch of road that requires extra traction.

Components of VW 4MOTION®

What components make up the VW 4MOTION® system? There are two main parts.

  • An electronically–controlled multi–plate clutch (also known as Haldex coupling)
  • Torsen differential

The electronically–controlled multi–plate clutch keeps an eye on drive torque, wheel slip, and handling conditions. The Torsen differential turns on or shuts off the power that is transferred to the wheels.

Volkswagen AWD Performance

On Volkswagen 4MOTION® AWD vehicles, the basic framework of AWD has been taken and improved upon to boost performance. While all tires remain engaged, most often 4MOTION® AWD will distribute about 90% of the power to the front axle and 10% to the rear axle. This distribution allows for the responsive handling Madison drivers are used to in FWD vehicles, while still providing a quick shift for additional traction.

If the 4MOTION® sensors detect a tire is beginning to lose traction weight is immediately redistributed as needed. This means the perfect balance of torque is applied to keep you and your Volkswagen in control on the O'Fallon roadways.
