Volkswagen keeps the Atlas simple: one 2.0-liter turbo making 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, an 8-speed automatic, and front-wheel drive or 4MOTION all-wheel drive. EPA estimates run 20 city/27 highway mpg with front-wheel drive. Properly equipped, it tows up to 5,000 pounds with either drivetrain, and the factory hitch is standard from the SE with Technology up.

Toyota offers three choices: a 265-horsepower 2.4-liter turbo, a 245-horsepower 2.5-liter hybrid, and the 362-horsepower Hybrid MAX with standard all-wheel drive. The front-drive hybrid's EPA-estimated 36 combined mpg is the efficiency headline of this segment. Towing splits by powertrain, 5,000 pounds for the gas engine and Hybrid MAX but 3,500 for the 2.5-liter hybrid.

Every Atlas gets a 12.0-inch center touchscreen, the 10.25-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro instrument display, wireless App-Connect, and wireless charging, with harman/kardon premium audio available. Notably, the digital instrument cluster is standard on the base SE, not reserved for the top of the range.

The Grand Highlander counters with a 12.3-inch touchscreen on every grade, but keeps analog gauges with a 7-inch display on LE and XLE; the 12.3-inch digital cluster arrives on Limited and Platinum. An 11-speaker JBL system covers Limited and above, and Toyota's Traffic Jam Assist offers hands-free operation on the Platinum, though only below 25 mph and with a Drive Connect subscription.

IQ.DRIVE is standard on every Atlas: Front Assist emergency braking, Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, Lane Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Travel Assist for semi-automated highway driving on I-64 runs into St. Louis.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on every Grand Highlander with the Pre-Collision System, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, and Lane Tracing Assist, plus a standard Blind Spot Monitor. Both companies made the important safety content standard, so read the fine print on the features you would actually use.

The Atlas seats seven with a second-row bench or six with available captain's chairs, and its cargo hold runs 20.6 cubic feet behind the third row to 96.6 with both rows folded. The Grand Highlander seats seven or eight and posts 20.6 cubic feet behind its third row, 57.9 behind the second, and 97.5 maximum, a hair more than the Atlas at the top end. Both were designed around adults fitting in row three; the Atlas answers Toyota's eight-seat option with a more sculpted second-row captain's chair layout.

The Atlas runs 200.7 inches long on a 117.3-inch wheelbase, and that long wheelbase is where its third-row space comes from. Front-wheel drive is available on SE and SE with Technology, while Peak Edition, SEL, and SEL Premium R-Line include 4MOTION; the dimensions page breaks down the numbers.

The Grand Highlander is slightly longer overall at 201.4 inches but rides a shorter 116.1-inch wheelbase. Both fit the same garage. The practical differences stay where the earlier sections put them: powertrain philosophy and equipment layout, not size.
