There is only one engine in the 2027 Volkswagen Taos, so there is only one thing that moves its fuel economy: the drivetrain. An S and an SEL with matching drivetrains post identical numbers, and no trim carries a fuel-economy penalty for its equipment.

Front-wheel-drive versions of the 2027 Taos are EPA-estimated at 27 mpg in the city, 35 on the highway and 30 combined, with an EPA annual fuel cost of $2,100 and 297 grams of CO2 per mile. Volkswagen quotes the same numbers on its own materials.

Order 4MOTION and the estimates move to 25 city, 33 highway and 28 combined, with an annual fuel cost of $2,250 and 315 grams per mile. That is a $150 difference a year at the EPA's assumed mileage, which is a smaller gap than most buyers expect for all-wheel drive. Volkswagen's own footnote applies to both: these are EPA estimates, and your mileage will vary with driving habits and vehicle condition.

2027 Volkswagen Taos Fuel Tank Capacity

Volkswagen fits two different tanks. A front-wheel-drive Taos holds 13.2 gallons, and a 4MOTION Taos holds 14.5, which is a little over a gallon more. Neither varies by trim, so the S and the SE Black on the same drivetrain carry the same fuel.

The larger tank is not incidental. It more than offsets the 4MOTION car's higher consumption, so the all-wheel-drive Taos covers slightly more ground between fill-ups than the front-driver. Both run on regular unleaded, and neither asks for premium.

Volkswagen publishes no range figure for the Taos, so the numbers here are calculated from its EPA estimates and tank sizes rather than quoted from a specification sheet. On combined ratings, a front-wheel-drive Taos covers 396 miles on 13.2 gallons at 30 mpg, and a 4MOTION car covers 406 miles on 14.5 gallons at 28 mpg.

The bigger tank means the all-wheel-drive Taos actually travels ten miles farther between stops on those figures, which reverses what most people assume.
